The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 8.2 percent in the year through September, which exceeded most projections. Prices increased 6.6 percent excluding fuel and food. CPI was up 0.4 percent for the month of September.

The CPI is a measure of the average change over time in prices paid by urban consumers for a market basket of consumer goods. The index represents more than 200 categories in eight major groups (food and beverages, housing, apparel, transportation, medical care, recreation, education and communication, and other goods and services).
