Report: Datacenter Demand Just the Beginning
March 24, 2025
Surging demand across the U.S. must be met by increased capacity and an all-of-the-above approach that utilizes affordable and reliable energy sources. These are the findings of the U.S. Power Demand Study, commissioned by a who’s who list of non-governmental organizations and performed by S&P Global Commodity Insights.
The report states that energy demand is surging due to economic growth, technological advancement, and industrial expansion with projected growth of 35-50% by 2040. The next decade will see new demand increase more than any other 10-year period in U.S. history.
For the next five years, there is a risk of demand growth surging past supply growth. Datacenters and manufacturing facilities typically take two to three years to construct, but new generation can take five years or more to come online.
Without new power resources, the grid will face reliability challenges. Initial demand growth comes from data centers and manufacturing into the early 2030s. However, longer-term electrification of transportation and heating continue the trend well in the next decade.
The report was commissioned by the following:
- Alliance to Save Energy
- American Clean Power Association
- American Petroleum Institute
- Clean Energy Buyers Association
- National Electrical Manufacturers Association
- Nuclear Energy Institute
- US Chamber of Commerce
