PJM, ERCOT, NYISO Report Soaring Demand
July 09, 2018
Three U.S. electricity markets saw a surge in demand last week, as higher temperatures pushed up usage around the July 4 holiday. PJM reported 144,557 MW of demand on July 3, the highest since August 2016; ERCOT reported 69,647 MW of demand on July 2, a record for the month; and NYISO reported its highest demand since 2013, at 32,810 MW, on July 2. All three markets had sufficient generation reserves to meet demand, but the bigger test for ERCOT will likely come later this summer, when the Texas grid operator expects to hit a new peak demand high of 72,974 MW.
