NYISO: Grid Can Handle Indian Point Closure, But Will Need Replacement Capacity
December 15, 2017
NYISO issued a report saying the state’s power system can withstand the loss of Indian Point’s two nuclear reactors, and that the grid would remain reliable through 2023 “if sufficient replacement sources of power are added within the lower Hudson Valley.” According to the analysis, the best answer to replacing Indian Point’s capacity may come from three new natural gas-fired plants in the region. Without those facilities, which are under construction, additional sources of power would be needed to maintain reliability, NYISO said.
