ISO-NE Sees Natural Gas Making Up Majority Of Capacity Mix By 2020
November 15, 2017
ISO-New England expects natural gas-fired generation to make up the majority of its system capacity mix by 2020. Gas-fired power should grow from 44.5 percent of the mix this year to about 51 percent by 2020, the operator said, and increase to 56 percent by 2026. It added that further retirements of coal and oil generators are expected after 2020 because of generally low gas prices, renewable energy additions, and pending environmental regulations. While ISO-NE projected the region would have sufficient resources to meet capacity requirements, limited availability of gas transportation infrastructure remained a concern.
