Ian Continues New Breed of Storms
October 03, 2022
Hurricane Ian was nearly 500 miles wide and the 5th strongest storm to hit the U.S. The section of the storm with hurricane force winds was 100 miles wide and the eye was 30 miles in diameter.
Since 1950, 6 of 9 major storms to hit Florida have occurred since 2004. Experts from The Nature Conservancy connect climate change with a new breed of tropical storms. Heat trapping gasses including carbon dioxide and methane contribute to higher ocean water temperatures. This contributes to larger, slower moving storms that intensify quickly.
