ERCOT Projects Strong Demand Growth and Tight Supply
February 21, 2025
ERCOT has published its 2025-2029 Capacity, Demand and Reserves (CDR) report. The CDR report is a snapshot of potential supply resource availability and demand over the next five years.
The forecast estimates that demand for power will nearly double by 2030, largely due to population growth, more extreme weather and surging demand increases among large users such as crypto mines, data centers and electrifying oil and gas operations. The most aggressive growth scenario shows energy supply falling 6.2% short of peak demand in 2026 and the gap widens to 32.4% by summer 2029, with winter seasons seeing slightly smaller shortages over the same time span.
